Cigar Review - Cohiba Robusto

For many years, as I started getting more into the world of cigars, I often saw Cohiba cigars as the Holy Grail of cigars.  They were always separated from the normal stock, sometimes locked up by the counter, ALWAYS priced really high, and you only heard people suggest them for special occasions, and I’m not even talking about the Cuban series.

Times seemed to have changed, but the allure of Cohiba still holds.  With this change, I don’t believe it’s Cohiba that’s changed, it’s more that the rest of the industry has caught up.  Cohiba is considered expensive.  While every cigar brand has certain cigars that are on the higher end of the price points, the entire Cohiba brand itself is often priced quite high.  I was given a sample box of different cigars a little while ago, and the Cohiba Robusto I saved onto.  Not really for a special occasion, but more for the fact that I wanted to seriously sit and enjoy every puff of it.

It has a Mexican binder, a Dominican filler, and a Cameroon wrapper.  I made sure I kept it well humidified and even checked on it every now and then.  It seemed like a tightly packed cigar.  Very firm, but not dried out.  That’s just how they roll!  (Get it!?  Roll!? Cigar rolling!?)  Ok, bad humor aside…   Cohiba Robustos range from about $8 - $14.  Many of the boxes range right around $200.  It is definately one of the more expensive series of cigars.

Lighting & First Taste:

As I stated above, it was a tightly packed cigar, but had such an ease when drawing from it.  It cut well, had  no noticeable imperfections, and just had a good look to it.  I often like to smell the cigars before lighting up, and it had a perfect classic cigar smell to it.  The kind of aroma that gets you excited when you walk into a great smelling humidor.  It lit up perfectly even, drew well, and tasted great.  It initial draw had a rich creamy dark chocolate feel to it.

Smoking the Cigar:

The burn stayed very consistant throughout the cigar.  The ash was tight and stayed on holding about an inch of itself easily.  It’s considered a medium body, but I’d say it’s definately a cross between medium and heavy, in my opinion.  Once I really got into the body, you could definately taste the aged leaves, which is something Cohiba is really known for.  That flavor stayed throughout the entire cigar.

The Finish:

Towards the end, the draw became a little more difficult, most likely due to the increased moistness and the tightness of the roll.  The taste was still great.  As far as finish the end of this cigar, I’d say it finished as one of the best tasting cigars I’ve had in awhile. With that being said, there are many cigars that rate up just as well as the Cohiba, so I’m not sure it’s worth the money, but it’s definately a great cigar.

Band & Packaging:

I love the Cohiba label.  It’s simple, but demands a certain attention from it.  I didn’t receive it in the normal packaging because it came within a Robusto sample box.  Although I have seen many of the Cohiba boxes, and am impressed on how well they package their cigars.

Rating:

8.5 out of 10 puffs
