The Torano family has been associated with cigars dating back to the early 1900’s. They typically build in the mild to medium body range and are known more for their complex blends. The Carlos Torano Casa Torano is what they have called as the “house blend.” By this they mean that this is what the family smokes on an everyday basis. It was rolled exclusively for the family and at a select few events to demonstrate the Torano specialty leaves. It’s priced very fair, and has a mild to medium blend of a Connecticut seed Ecuadorian wrapper and the family’s specially crafted filler that comprises tobaccos from all over Central and South America.
Initially I wasn’t sure what to think of the first experience. It felt like it was rolled tight and had a springy texture feel when I pinched it. It has a lighter colored wrapper and was very smooth. I was able to cut through it easily and it had a medium aroma to it. Not overpowering, but had a sense of aged leaves.
Lighting & First Taste:
It had a bit of a firm draw when lighting up. It produced a fair amount of smoke, and was lighter in color. It had a nice oak blend with a small amount of spice and some sweet undertones. Overall it was a descent blend, and began with a slow burn. This definitely fit in the medium category so far.
Smoking the Cigar:
The burn continued at a slow pace, and there was no touch up needed. It wasn’t producing a high volume of smoke like it did originally, but stayed steady as a medium bodied stick. I would definitely put this in the after dinner or morning coffee category of cigars. The nutty taste that began to emerge made me think how it would go together well with coffee.
The Finish:
The end began to get a little harsh. It felt like the cigar began to get dry and had gained an edge in the taste. It still wasn’t producing that much smoke, but I like how slow it burned and how well it was constructed overall.
Band & Packaging:
It was a well constructed cigar for being a shade grown wrapper. No visible problems. The band was a classic looking band, but the picture on the background was left to be desired and made it look amateurish. It came off easy and left no damage to the wrapper.
