Cigar Review - NUB Cameroon 460

The Nub cigar brand is a new brand of cigars with an interesting background. Sam Leccia use to be a cigar sales rep for Olivia Cigar Co. He had an idea of creating a cigar that represented the “best part of the cigar.” Which is essentially the nub of the cigar, which some refer to as the most enjoyable part of the cigar or the “sweet spot.” The sweet spot is considered to be at the 3 ½” or 4” mark of the cigar. So no NUB cigar is longer than 4 inches.

So the first question I had is how much is this really short cigar? Well it might be short, but it doesn’t skimp on the tobacco. The ring gauges range from 56-66. Which means that almost every NUB cigar contains about the same amount of tobacco as most Churchill sizes and lasts about the same length of time. The NUB cigars currently come in three wrappers: Habano, Connecticut, and Cameroon. There are three common sizes between the wrappers and each wrapper comes in an additional size unique to itself.

Today I tried the NUB Cameroon 460. The name comes from the size 4 X 60. The Cameroon wrapper is grown in Cameroon Africa, the filler and blender come from Nicaragua, and the flavor is listed as a medium-body. For such a small length cigar, you could feel the additional weight that it held from the additional tobacco. I really LOVE the look of the short fat cigars. It had a strong aroma with hint of sweetness. It was a well constructed cigar, and had no visible marks. The wrapper felt very smooth and had good looking veins in the leaves.

Lighting and First Taste:

I was interested in how this cigar would light up. Large ring gauges don’t always have an easy or smooth draw. This NUB did light up easy and very even. It had a very wooded taste, and I didn’t notice any sweetness even though I could smell one initially. I also thought it could fall into a full-body category rather then the medium-body it’s listed as.

Smoking the Cigar:

The cigar did have a slower burn to it. The draw was consistent and smooth. The taste didn’t change really, which is really the point of this cigar. I only had to break the ash on this cigar one time. It still felt on a little on the full-body side, but I could see how it could fit in the different categories. The wooded taste was still there, and the draw was very creamy and smooth.

The Finish:

It didn’t take too long to get to the finish. Although the burn on this cigar was slower then average, it still felt like a quick smoke. I have a handful of different Churchills that I’m 100% would last longer than this cigar. The draw remained consistent, and the taste geared up a little bit getting more peppery towards the end.

Band & Packaging:

The packaging was done well, and I like the simplicity of the band. It did not stick to the wrapper, and came off easily. The construction of the cigar was very well done considering the large ring gauge.
