Cigar Review - Carlos Torano Exodus 1959

Carlos Torano is one of the premium cigar manufacturers hands down. I don’t think many can question that. They are consistent, well structured, great tasting, and moderately priced. The Carlos Torano Exodus 1959 has been getting some chatter that it’s not living up to the Carlos Torano name. I had been passing this one over for quite some time as I’ve been getting into a more medium-body kick when picking out my sticks. The thought of a bad Torano cigar had me quite inquisitive so I had to see for myself.

Cigar Review - Gurkha Status

Gurkha Status came out in October 2007 and was one of the most anticipated cigars to hit the market. Gurkha’s popularity has been soaring lately. The marketing campaigns are very well planned and they have a niche on the symbolic campaign behind the naming of the cigars. Still, cigars are more about the marketing; they have to back it up. I’ve seen many over-hyped cigars bite the dust because they have oversaturated the market and almost killed off any excitement. Still, Gurkha has predominantly been a front runner in marketability and anticipation. (more…)

Cigar Review - Macanudo 1968

Ok, my last Macanudo entry was a little harsh.  I reviewed the Cafe Crystal.  It was an ok cigar, and left me feeling ok about the experience.  No bells went off, no excitement, etc.  I was left thinking Macanudo, even being one of the most popular cigar manufacturers, has begun it’s legacy of mediocrity.  THAN I tried the Macanudo 1968 that was sent to me.  I think my perception has possibly been altered a bit… (more…)

Cigar Review - Helix 550 Maduro

Ok, I know I’ve been lazy about posting, but having a new baby somehow makes you shut the computer down a little bit more. So I plan on trying to review at least 3 cigars this week. I’ll start with one that is a nice descent cigar to keep in your humidor when friends come over or you just feel like burning one “just because.” It’s the Helix 550 Maduro. Helix cigars are bound in select Honduran tobaccos and the 550 is wrapped in a Connecticut Broadleaf and filled with a blend of Mexican harvested Cuban seed filler. This one was considered a medium body, and the shade had a good brown tint to it. The entire line of Helix, produced from General Cigar, is aged a minimum of 3 years, and the Connecticut Shade wrapper leaf is over five years old. (more…)

Cigar Review - Rocky Patel Sun Grown Toro

Rocky Patel has often been a favorite brand of mind. They are often dark, bold, and spicy. There is hardly ever a better combination in a cigar. This RP Sun Grown is a more full bodied big brother to the Vintage lines. Rocky Patel is known across the industry for his quality and consistency when making his cigars. (more…)

Cigar Review - NUB Cameroon 460

The Nub cigar brand is a new brand of cigars with an interesting background. Sam Leccia use to be a cigar sales rep for Olivia Cigar Co. He had an idea of creating a cigar that represented the “best part of the cigar.” Which is essentially the nub of the cigar, which some refer to as the most enjoyable part of the cigar or the “sweet spot.” The sweet spot is considered to be at the 3 ½” or 4” mark of the cigar. So no NUB cigar is longer than 4 inches. (more…)

Cigar Review - Carlos Torano Casa Torano

The Torano family has been associated with cigars dating back to the early 1900’s. They typically build in the mild to medium body range and are known more for their complex blends. The Carlos Torano Casa Torano is what they have called as the “house blend.” By this they mean that this is what the family smokes on an everyday basis. It was rolled exclusively for the family and at a select few events to demonstrate the Torano specialty leaves. It’s priced very fair, and has a mild to medium blend of a Connecticut seed Ecuadorian wrapper and the family’s specially crafted filler that comprises tobaccos from all over Central and South America.
